I understand that Force measured their HP at the crank and not at the prop from reading other threads. Is this true? If so is there a guesstimated HP as measured by other outboard manufacturers?

Re: 88 Force 85HP ,True Horsepower?

Since about 1982, all brands of engines are measured with horsepeower at the prop.

A sample set of engines is run on dynamameter under supervision of the certifying body and horsepower measured. This set of engines is allowed to vary (I think) about 5% from claimed horsepower.

So: Your 85 horse Force could be anywhere from 80 1/2 to 89 1/2 horsepower.

The problem with Force engines is not the claimed horsepower but the way they deliver it to the water. The late model Force engines with Mercury lower units SEEM to perform better than earlier ones.

In addition it is widely accepted that Mercury, for example is always rated lower than actual horsepower.
