88 Force 85hp goes only 10mph.....HELP.

The engine ran fine until I loaned it to a friend for a day. He said it ran great (45mph) but when I took it out the day after it started right up but max speed was 10mph. When I took off the cover, I noticed a lot of oil mist and oil coming out of the spark plugs hole. I removed the spark plugs and noticed a lot of build up and it was covered with oil and the spark plugs were new (about 10 hours old). I checked the mixture of gas / oil, it is not smoking. The engine starts up still but when I took it out to test it today with new plugs, it still only ran 10mph max. There is water coming out of the 2 holes, and temperature is fine. The gas line is fine but I did notice when I put new plugs in that it took about 5 minutes to start, it crank and crank but wouldn't run. Can someone give me some suggestion please? I just bought this boat for $5000 2 weeks ago, and I feel like I just threw away $5000! Any suggestion is welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

suggest you do a compression check,<br />it should be above 110# on each cylinder, and all withing 10# if each other.<br /><br />If compression checks out ok, check for spark on each cylinder.<br /><br />You say the boat only goes 10mph, but what is the engine doing?<br />Sputtering? running rough?<br />Revving normally?<br />Or are the rpm's staying low and the engine won't rev up?<br /><br />Also, post the model number of the motor.
