My Bayliner with a 125 hp Force outboard is slipping in reverse and sounds like it is coming out of gear. It started when I put it in reverse a little bit by accident while moving forward. The gear that engages the (flywheel, clutch, round thing on top with teeth), got the tip rounded enough that it is stripping the teeth on the reverse side of the (clutch, flywheel, thing). What is the gear deal called that engages reverse, and where could I locate one, and is the thing that looks like a flywheel on top a clutch, flywheel, or what, and is it difficult to locate one. Is there anything else that could be wrong or that I am not seeing?
Thank you.

The big disk that looks like a flywheel, is a flywheel.

The gears that engage the side of the flywheel, are for the starter, and only the starter.

The forward gear and reverse gear are in the lower unit, just in front of the propeller.

There is a shiftshaft that connects from the top of the motor, drown thru the midsection, and into the lower unit. This may need adjusting.

You will need a repair manual to walk you thru the steps.

Worst case senario, the clutchdog which engages the gears may be worn. You can have it refaced at a machine shop for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Try adjusting the shiftshaft before spending hundreds on parts.
