I am considering the purchase of a 95 Evinrude 88 SPL. Anybody have any experience with them, recommendations?
I would be replacing a 48 SPL. The 88 is max for my boat and I think it weighs about 100# more that the 48.

16' Duracraft, mod V, with flotation pods added to make it 17' 6" total. I think the pods will make up the difference for the added weight.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Re: 88 Evinrude

I've got a 1990 on my pontoon. In the 22 years I've had it it's been pretty low maintenance. The normal water pump impellers and lower unit lub.

Rebuilt the carbs and fuel pump once.
Replaced 2 of the spark coils.
Changed the spark plugs a couple of times.
Replaced a plastic roller on the throttle linkage.
Replaced the 2 water hoses for cylinder head cooling

The only other problem I had was an intermittent no start where I wasn't getting spark after it sat all winter. I traced that to a bad ground on the spark pack. Cleaned everything and added a second ground wire.

Other than that, just gas and oil.

Rock solid motors!! I am a very big fan of the V-4 motors. Good luck with it.
