I just picked up a 88 Donzi Reggazza. It has a mercruiser 350 and an OMC cobra outdrive. The teeth on the flywheel are worn out and it will not turn over fully and grinds. I saw that you can just replace the ring gear on the flywheel. My question is can the engine be pulled without removing the outdrive? I am a automotive/equipment mechanic by trade but I haven't messed around with any sterndrive boats, only outboards and jetskis. It looks like it shouls be possible by the clearance around the engine. Has anyone attempted this?

Howdy,

Welcome aboard,

It is possible to do remove the engine without removing the drive.

But you still have to align the engine (after re-installing it) using an alignment tool.

You MUST remove the drive to do the alignment.

If you don't align the engine you will risk coupler failure.

In order to replace a coupler, the drive and engine must be removed.

It's a fairly easy job to pull the drive and engine. Most any automotive machine shop can replace your ring gear.

..... My question is can the engine be pulled without removing the outdrive? ....

Possible, yes.... Advisable, No....

You only have to move the engine the wrong way while the drive shaft is still engaged and you risk damage to the coupler and/or gimbal bearing and/or uni-joints.

As you need to remove the drive anyway to check/adjust the engine alignment after the work, why not pull it first and eliminate the unnecessary risk of damage....

pull the drive, remove the 2 rear bolts, the front lags ,associated wiring ,hoses, cables, etc. lift up and remove rear housing, coupler, and flywheel.
Replace ring gear and reassemble, check/adjust engine alignment, install drive.

Re: 88 Donzi Reggazza 23' flywheel

I pulled the drive and the motor. The flywheel looked like it had been replaced before and had v-6 painted on it. My friend had a spare 4.3l flywheel that I tried and the starter doesn't seem to mesh correctly. I tried a new starter and it is the same. Are the 5.7 and 4.3 flywheels different? it looks like the 4.3 might be smalled in diameter just slightly

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Chevys use either a 12, 3/4" flywheel, or a 14" flywheel, which is determined by the starter bolt pattern,...

'n,... Yes, the 4.3l flywheel is balanced Very differently than a 350 flywheel,...
Even though they'll bolt on, it'll vibrate Badly,....

It has the offset starter bolt pattern. Which size would that be?

The right flywheel seems like it will work. when I took the exhaust off to pull the motor, I noticed that one of the exhaust flappers was missing. I was wondering if these are necessary and if so where to get one. They seem hard to find

Don't know where you're looking. You usually just order them directly from Mercruiser parts......

As this is an OMC transom assembly, and therefore exhaust pipe, I would think the shutters are OMC too... I would seriously doubt the Merc ones will fit. As for finding the OMC shutters.... OMC stopped making stern drives about 15 years ago. Spares are hard to find. You could try some of the other on-line suppliers...

Chris.....
EDIT: I have found a part number for the OMC shutters. It's 0984467. To confirm you actually do have the OMC exhaust system, can you post a photograph of the exhaust side of your engine (including the elbow) and the exhaust pipe below the elbow...
