I've got an 88SPL that runs like a top on a 17' 1971 whaler. Here is my dilema.

~ I need tilt/trim due to running shallow bays
~ I don't trust it due to age etc. It is fine for me and my buddies running around but for a family outing I'm not convinced it is a reliable motor.

Do I:

1. Buy an aftermarket tilt/trim unit and go with 88SPL dummy...
or
2. Sell the old girl and buy a late model outboard with tilt and trim

If 2, what do you think the old girl is worth, as of now it runs fantastic, starts easy, idles great etc.

that is one heck of a motor, had one, sorry i ever sold it. put a CMC unit on it, and keep on boating. properly maintained that motor, your grandkids will be running it.

A little off the subject, but what makes the '88 88spl a great motor? Is that the same basic motor as the '98 115SPL?

The tilt/trim units are pretty much a universal design, being used with both the V4 and V6 crossflow engines. Check for used units. They are relatively inexpensive. Keep in mind you will need to add the trim switch at the helm and the electrical box which mounts on the powerhead exhaust cover. Would be good to get all these misc items with the purchase of the hydraulic unit.

the 88 spl, is the 90hp without the oil mixing system, very little to go wrong.
