Well, after having my boat for several years with very minor problems I've run into something I'm having problems tackling. We had to boat out last week during a camping trip and it worked great like any other time. About a week after parking it in the drive way I walked by and saw oil coming from a small hole in the lower unit, after some research I found its called a weep hole and normally just water should be coming from it.
I pull the drain plug and clear water comes out followed by gear oil. Great..... So I start pulling the easier stuff off to look for problems. Prop seal is showing no leaking, although it is a bit dry looking. I pulled the impeller housing off and noticed oil on the metal plate and looking at the shaft I see the seal has failed.
In my Seloc manual the housing the impeller butts up to is suppose to come off after removing 2 screws and pulling on it with vise grips, but that baby is seized on there. No go. I know that seal needs to be changed for sure and I'm trying whatever I can to not have to pull the entire upper off the boat since it looks like a can of worms I don't want to tackle.
Ok, thats the story so far. Now, for my questions.
The impeller shaft seal is in the upper gear case, the oil leak is from the lower unit.
Would the impller shaft seal cause the leak in the lower unit?
Any advice on how to remove that housing?
What other seals could cause a leak from the weep hole?
Are there probable bad seals in the lower causing the weep hole to leak?
Am I in way over my head and better off taking it to an expert?
Thanks for reading!
