My dad recently gave me the 87 monarch bass boat we used when i was a kid. The boat has been sitting in a field uncovered for at least 13yrs. It has an 87 115hp 6cyl mercury outboard which is very clean considering. Now keep in mind i know NOTHING bout working on boats and i am VERY far from being a mechanic. That being said when we attempt to start it up it seems like its trying. Everything seems to be turning and everything. We believe that the idle stabilizer is the issue as it has a red wire that just fell apart(all other wires appear fine) which from what i have read can be removed and work around. My question is how do i do that? Again remember i am dumb know nothing about working on boats and very little about mechanical stuff. Don't all my crap everywhere its a work in progress lol

If it sat with fuel in the carburetors they will need to be cleaned.----It will need a new water pump impeller.-----If it has the autoblend mixer , that unit should be thrown away.-----Battery , cables and starter must be in good condition.----Flywheel must spin fast to energize the ignition system

Start with the basics...pull the spark plugs, check them, and see if you have good spark. As Racerone said, if its been sitting that long...you'll most likely need to take the carbs and give them a good cleaning and will definatley want to replace the water impeller. Check your other fuel lines too to see if they are falling apart from old age. That inline fuel filter looks like it needs to be replaced to. Would not hurt to check the compression on the cylinders too (I see that someone did that and posted the numbers on a piece of tape--if that was you, ignore this step).

As far as the wire....I would simply pull back the black casing a bit...connect a new piece of wire with an eyelet on the end and reconnect it to the bolt....

This is what it sounds like when trying to start but really just trying to figure out how to bypass the idle stabilizer

Are you pushing the ley in and holding it in while cranking it over ?-----Raising the fast idle lever?-----Post video of you operating the control box to start this fine motor.

If you remove or bypass the idle stabilizer, you are going to have to adjust the timing on the motor afterwards to get it to run right....Can I ask why you are so hell bent on removing it, rather than fixing it?

You could try and get a new what? The wire you are talking about goes to the switch box.
Why don't you just remove the eyelet that the wire was connected to from the switch box, strip back the covering of the red wire you have left, use a small piece of proper gauged wire and connect it to that red wire and clamp a new eyelet on the end and reconnect to the panel?
I do not think the idle stabilizer is causing your motor to not start though...it can make starting tougher, but its job is to keep the motor idling correctly and not let it stall out.

Have you pulled the fuel line coming from fuel pump to see if you are getting fuel to that carbs?

Pushing your key in while turning operates the choke. you should have either a small lever you can raise on the control box to increase idle, if not you wiggle and pull out the shift lever then move forward, this will leave it in neutral and increase the idle for easier starts. other than that all seriousness aside, if you cant get her running I call dibs on removing this ol motor and finding a new home for her. LOL

The wire fell completely apart all the way to the box it comes out of which does not come apart to replace the wire.

I did replace the fuel line going from the fuel talk to the outboard but have not checked the one from the pump

A 1987 motor would not have a Choke. It would have an Enrichment System that delivers some extra fuel to the crankcase to aid starting
The control box of that era, had a button in at the Rotation Point of the Throttle Lever, that you pushed in to disengage the Gear Shiftmercontrol3.jpg

Nah, you want SNAFU. Situation Normal, All FU.

Or TU. That one is bit harder to explain, with clean language.
