So I got the TOP running and found some kinks. First one is that it has a leak at cyl 1 in the water jacket and apparently had it for some time
IMG_20170115_111533986_HDR_zpsyvsrrtsc.jpgIf anyone could throw out any tips to replacing this it would be appreciated.

My biggest question is do I have to pull the powerhead to do this?

Is there anything else I should put hands on while doing this?

Thanks for any help.

There should be no need to pull the powerhead off on a freshwater motor.---Replace the gasket , just nuts and bolts type work.

So there is what looks like a temp sensor right next to that plug, with the leaking water right there would that cause the temp to be read incorrectly and cause a high idle situation?

Here's a pic I took 30 yrs ago changing the cover on a 1984 115hp. As for the sensor, that's the first time I've ever seen anything screwed in there. Though it isn't really seen in the first image, the front support is also removed to enable the lower cowl to be tilted out of the way
Pic gets bigger if you click on it

You can smear a bit of silicone caulk over the leak to seal it. That beats the crap out of breaking some/most/all of those 1/4-20 bolts, on your 29 year old motor.

That would be my recommendation.....

Thanks for the reponses, I plan on attacking it with a mall scrub brush and some red. But keep a close eye on it with gasket in hand.
