So I've been trying to figure this motor out for a while. Normally I can scour the Internet and find answers for anything, but this one is different.

The motor has 115 psi on each of the 3 cylinders.
It has a brand new stator from CDI.
Brand new switch box from CDI.
Trigger passes tests.
3 new ignition coils, 3 new plug wires. 2 different sets of new plugs.
All electrical connections have been taken apart and cleaned thoroughly.
I've had the carbs off a few times and they're spotless, new gaskets throughout, new needles, and floats set to 7/16".

I have spark on all cylinders, and there have been times where it seems to run on all 3, at which point it seems to idle fine, but for the most part I have to keep it at half throttle for it to run, and I always need full throttle for it to start.

The top cylinder is consistent: while the motor is running, I can yank plug wires one at a time, and the only one that consistently has a significant drop in Rpms is the top cylinder. The others are hit or miss.
Cyl #1 spark plug looks black.
Cyl#2/3 plugs look white, as if they aren't getting fuel.
Do I have reason to suspect reed valves?

When I crack the throttle plates open while running, I can shine a light down the carbs and see equal amounts of fuel being pulled from the tubes into the engine. Why wouldn't this fuel be making it into the cylinders?

Is there a chance that I have a bad seal in the crankcase between cylinders 2 and 3?

Please help me, this boat is making me hate boats, and boats are one of my 3 favorite things! Help!

Try checking the fuel lines from the top carb to the rest of the carbs and enricher valve for any air leakage and good fuel flow. Also check the enricher valve to make sure it is closing and not leaking fuel thru when it is closed. After that you need to check the spark to each cylinders with a timing light to make sure they are getting good spark at idle and at higher RPM's. JMO

Look at the piston crowns on all 3 cylinders. Do the crowns on 2 and 3 look different than that of #1? Are they clean looking?

Or the trigger wires to the switch box being reversed.

Re: 87 merc 80 3-cyl nuisance. HELP PLEASE!

Switch box has markings that say which color wires go where for both the coil wires and trigger wires .. Those are right.. I'm almost positive that I got the ignition coil wires right, and I tried switching 2 and 3 at the coil which had no positive impact..

It seems that I have intermittent spark on cylinder 3. I switched the wires going from the switch box to the coils to see if the problem followed the coil or the wires from the box. The problem follows the coil (coils are brand new)...

So I'm going to investigate the coil and plug wire, even though they are both brand new.. But I still find it odd that the plugs on 2 and 3 are both pearl white as if there is no fuel getting to them.. And I find it odd that cylinder 2 doesn't seem to have fire either: I can yank the plug wire while its running and have little-to-no decrease in rpm on either cylinder 2 or 3.. Does anyone have experience with bad crank seals on these? On cylinder 2 I can pull the wire and it'll arc from the wire over an inch to the plug so I know it has good spark..

You said the stator is new, and you checked the trigger. Look really close to the trigger again. Merc's wiring of that era had issues, and it would not be uncommon for the wire to to rotted from the inside out, or broken off just at the bend of the trigger under the flywheel. I chased the same issue until I finally changed out the trigger.

I still have a few parts for this motor if you end up needing something. I parted out a 70 earlier this year.
