87 Merc 3.0 shift cable route

Can anyone confirm the path the shift cable should take on a 4 cylinder alpha one. I have seen where it comes into the boat and makes a bend upward behind the hydraulic unit and then over to the shift plate. I am very afraid of kinking the sheath.

I have the same motor. Mine comes in the transom, curves around behind the motor and then comes up and goes between the motor and the rubber boot that connects the riser and the exhaust so it is lined up with the linkage
