So I just got an 87 us marine force 125 and the guy had drained the lower unit and said when he took out the drain plug he lost it but I figured no big deal ill just buy a new one but turns out it was the clutchpin bolt in the side not the drain plug and in the owners manual it says not to remove that. So can I just get a new one and put it in and go or do i need to do anything before i reinstall the new one . Any and all help would be great.

Re: 87 force 125 clutch pin

That is the dog clutch yoke pivot pin. It is a special bolt with all threads removed EXCEPT for the last 1/4 inch under the head. It is used on all larger Force engines right until they were changed to Mercury lower units.

Since the engine has been jostled a bit it is likely that the yoke has moved from its original position and the pivot pin will not go in properly.

FIRST, try to replace it and see if you get lucky--see if the engine shifts from forward through neutral and into reverse, then back. If it does, fill the lower unit with lube and run the engine. If it does not shift properly, drop the lower unit and remove the water pump and base. Then search threads for how to reposition the yoke and insert the pivot pin.
