Today I went out on a local lake and the following happened. I was full throttle when I decided I was going to turn around. I let out the throttle and began to turn the boat around. I was in about two to three feet of water according to the fish finder. I had the boat turned around and began to push the throttle back to full again. Once I was at full throttle the engine seemed acted as if the clutch was slipping in a car. You could hear the rpm's going up but the boat was only moving about half the speed it usally does at full throttle and the boat was pitching up in the water really bad. For the rest of the ride back to the boat ramp, I had to keep it at half throttle of less. Can some tell me what happened. My grandfather which was not with me thought I may have hit bottom and broke the shear pin? Any help would be appreciated.

You might have fouled the prop so that it started cavitating, but more likely is a spun prop hub.

With the engine in gear see if you can turn the prop. If so, the rubber hub has failed. Any prop shop can fix it for under $100.

Good luck. :)

Grandad could be right, sounds like you've either got a broken pin or a spun hub.

Most likely a spun hub on the prop. Take it to any prop shop or marine repair place to get it rehubbed.

Well I checked the prop. I put it in gear and tried to spin the prop. I could do so but it took a little bit of force to make it turn. Does this still sound like a spun hub?

Yes. If you could spin it at all, it needs a new hub installed at a prop shop. Should be well under $50.00. You may also want to consider buying a new prop. They are pretty cheap for those models. BTW-I had an 87' 28 special for many years and never a problem. Still running strong for the current owner. Great motors..

Draw a line across the hub and prop, or use the cotter pin as a centre line, run it in the water until you hear it "slip", pull it out, then check the lines, if they are no longer lined up, your hub is definately spun.

Have it re hubbed like suggested, unless the age of the prop would warrant getting a new one. No point in getting a damaged prop re hubbed.

Not to sound like a novice, but I am. If I purchase a new prop for the motor then this will cure the problem if in-fact it is a spun hub? I guess I need to know if the hub is considered the portion of the prop that slips onto lower Unit gear that sticks out. Thanks guys for your help.

Correct, the hub is the center of the prop, buying a new one will indeed correct your problem.
