Hey guys.
back again. this time with a well duh kind of issue but I want the general thoughts on this before i "do"....
The starter is Pretty new (was just replaced by the previous owner who bought the boat as a fixxer up and realized he had no idea what he was doing" he said the starter did not come with the Little gear (id call it the bendix but i dont think its the same thing as in automobiles) on the top and reused the old one.
Well I finally got the thing running and after my trip round the lake i stopped the engine to get my trailer. I come back to start it only to hear it WHIRR..... well i hand crank the boat up, go home, and pop the cover off. I found that the Nut off the end of the start shaft flew off the end of the shaft, later to be retrieved under the carbs. I put it all back together but i noticed that every once in a while it would get stuck either UP or DOWN. I solved the UP problem as the little Spacer that was in there was missing and i was able to resolve that. but the stuck down... thats perplexing. Now i do have a fully charged battery in most cases but i found this happens the most after a good long (20-30 minute) run up and down the lake. Im thinking the following 2 Things are occuring, or are needed to be done..
1. I know the engine is not charging. I checked my stator output on the yellow wires and i have 22 volts ac at an idle (prob around 1200 rpm). I have to guess at the RPM because i have an intermittent tach pulse and i have new triggers. Im thinking i may be burning too much of the battery power up during the runs, but my understanding is the engine will operate without a battery as the stator creates the voltage needed for the ignition system. Could it be that im draining the battery down to far and theres not enough UMPH for the Gear to get enough centrifical force to extend? To note here, if i tap the gear with a wrench, it will spin up just fine.
2. perhaps i need a different Lubrication in there. I currently Sprayed it down with 3 n 1 penetrating oil.. The Seloc book i have recomends a light machine oil like 3n1 and i figured the pentrating oil would be similar. Howerver, its been my expereince that penetraiting oils are not long term lubricants and i think i might need to acutally use some approved lubricant or something.
At this point, besides my charging issue which i think is my recifier, this is remaining issue on the boat.
Any "experience has taught me this.." Suggestions?
