86 Starcraft Open Bow

I'm looking at an 86' Starcraft Open bow I/O, 14o hp, 3L, OMC ski boat. The owner says that it has only been run 3 times over the past few years, which I know is not good. He says it runs fine when you crank it, but once the choke cuts off it sputters and blows black smoke. What could this mean about the motor? Does it sound like a fixable problem?<br /><br />Also, how big of a job is it to repair the interior on these boats? <br /><br />Thanks

Before you spend ANY of your money on the purchase, spend a few dollars at a marina and have them do an inspection on the motor / outdrive / trailer. The money you spend at the marina will save you THOUSANDS in repair and maintenance that was neglected. Interior repairs could be just cosmetic carpet replacement or major deck repairs because of rotting wood underneath the carpet!<br /><br />A boat that was looked after is worth the investment but your case sounds like a worst case scenario and running shoes may be required.<br />The only way to know is to have someone qualified check first and there are many other boats out there that will show pride of ownership.

A 1986 OMC is going to be TOUGH to buy Parts for....<br />I'd Keep Looking... You Don't Want This Boat....

I tend to disargree take it to a marina have them look at it it could be the best 200 or less you veer spent plus it will give you a better sense of comfort, also it sounds like the choke is sticking nothng major but since its been sitting for so long has it been winterized properly? are the gasket going to leak after it runs a few time? sometimes storge can be a bad thing if not done porperly <br />PS I have a 85 4.3 merc sat for 1 year whne I got it added a litter gas started fine changed hte oil and plugs and has been running since. <br />CHECK THE CHOKE take a screw driver and place it in the carb making it so the flap stays open after it has warmed up.
