My 86 nissan 40c seems to be flooding itself out. With new plugs i couldn't ask for a better running motor , but after two or three starts the plugs get wet and i have a hard time starting it. The smell of gas is sometimes strong and i have to use full throttle to get it started and then punch it in gear to keep it running, and sometimes that doesn't work , as it will not idle once the plugs foul out. Once i get in gear it runs great. I appreciate any suggestions.

Your carb float is probably stuck. Remove the carb bowl and inspect float for ease is movement. Inspect needle and seat for wear also.

Also verify that the thermostat isn't jammed open. If the mixture seems OK with new plugs, the carb may be OK.

Extreme cold running can cause this syndrome. Had a similar problem on an old OMC, and scratched my head for a while before finding that the issue was the thermostat.

Usually the fuel system, but you will have to determine the cause of the problem, fuel or ignition, before you can fix it.
