Just got the boat. The oil injection has been taken off. The previous owner was mixing gas at 40:1. It seemed to smoke some at start up. Whats the pros and cons of taking the injection unit off and should I be mixing at 50:1? Thanks in advance for any info!

mix at 50 ta 1 unless ya turnin' it up for extended periods then go ta 40 ta 1 (Pennzoil blend recommended).. new ta you motor, no confirmed history then keep mixin'..... its an older 2 stroke so its gonna smoke... tha penn will help a "little"... other than that it needs ta be in good tune, ie: carbs, timin', stator, trigger, sw. boxes, plugs and such......jmo

I run all my outboards at 40/1 but I am running them for extended times at full throttle...Dukedog nailed it..timing. fresh fuel a must...Water separator a must given Ethanol and what it does....Wally World on the Blend...half the price of West Marine... I have never lost a motor on Pennzoil.... I run my bridgeport at 32/1 full syn Pennzoil but need to run the blend... Bridgeport is nickle bores that require full syn....

Agree with Duke. I used Pennzoil syn blend purchased at WM in the sporting goods section. It smoked very little in my '02 90. Other thing on smoking is you may be carboned up. Look in the archives for the subject: "Decarb". Do that then keep Sea Foam in your gas per recommendations on the can. Keeps her cleaned and out and running right. I learned about the stuff over 10 years ago on this site....never heard of it before. Worked for me.

On the removal, probably just owners choice. I pulled my pump gear and ran premix at 10 years of age on my engine just because it made me feel better to know for sure I had oil. 50:1 has been the norm for almost as long as I can remember. I say almost because back in my 59 18 hp Rude, I ran 24:1 (Quart to 6 gal).

Thank you for your responses. I will do some research in the archives. I will keep her tuned and I think I will continue to mix at 40:1. I don't mind paying a little more for Penzoil. Especially if helps with the smoke. I don't mind mixing either like you say piece of mind.... The boat runs wide open 5-10 miles in fresh water and then is shut down till the ride home. I am familiar with Sea Foam but only as preventative maintenance I have never used it to clean up a carboned motor. A lot of great info at this site, thank you very much. Steve

I had a weed eater and chain saw that I had replaced with new ones and they had been sitting around for several years unattended. I got them running to my satisfaction with nothing but gas pre mix and SF. It works.
