The hole spitting water indicates a leak in the diaphram

It still should not be spitting water through the little hole View attachment 172120 This is off my 40 HP Mine would spit water when the engine coughed due to water intrusion through the divider plate. I replaced the diaphram and it stoppe spitting water. Unitl I fixed it I just put a screw in it. There is no hole on this replaced cover but the old one had the little hole in the center. You may have nicked the new diaphram or not centered it when putting it on causing a leak. In any case no water is supposed to come out of it. The diapham is like a spring and gives relief when a backfire occurs

The poppet valve opens under pressure of the water pump and block restrictions(t-stats,passageways). Its purpose is to bleed off excessive water pressure of the water pump under rpm thus the name poppet valve. The hole is there for 2 things on V-6, indicater a bad /leaking diaphragm and air passage, if hole is plugged the poppet will not full open. The reason you have water is improper installation, loose screw to stem,corroded/pitted housing on has a nick or pinhole.....

Your corect fastbullet. I drew my assumption as I was not running a thermostat at the time and the coughing backpresure from the leaking divider plate was creating a surge in the water ports. I had thought that this was to protect gaskets from blowing a hole in them. Thanks for the clearification on the opening of the T stat and the popit relieving the pressure when doing so.
