I have no spark on all 6 cylinders. After reading the manual and reading posts on this site here are the tests and results

All plugs removed, spark tester set to 7/16" gap, red plug disconnected, jumped the starter- no spark

Disconnected the black/yellow wire connector to each power pack- No Spark

Sensor coil ohm readings were 42 +/-
The only reading that was not within specs was on the starboard side B terminal to the D terminal. I got a reading of 0.

The charge coil ohm reading was 790.
Below the 970 spec'd in the manual.

The charge coil output is 140.

Tested both power packs as per the manual and both showed no output.

All the ignition coil were within the ohms specified.

New battery, new plugs, all connections cleaned.

What are the chances of both power packs being no good?
Am I on the right track.

Thanks in advance
Mike

I see you have a new battery and cleaned all the connections, but is it cranking at a good 250 or 300 RPM?

Is that model a QuickStart?

It has the fast idle feature if that is what you are referring too.
To be honest I didn't check the cranking rpm.
It seems to have good cranking speed, it's not struggling or sluggish.
How do you check the rpm's?

Try doing a visual check through the cooling fins of your flywheel. Try to see if the magnets on the flywheel are evenly spaced.

I have pretty much the same problem with my 225, and have changed both power packs, the stator, and the timer base. New plug wires and plugs.

Today I will re-install the flywheel after letting it sit for 24 hours ( making sure the epoxy is fully set after re-gluing the magnets), and will let you know the results.

I refuse to let this problem get the best of me, but it is trying hard to do so.

If it were not for the help and knowledge gained on this forum, I would be totally lost, right now, I'm just somewhat lost......LOL

The flywheel magnets were previously all loose and bunched together.
I spaced them evenly around the flywheel and glued them in place.
I did check them during my testing this weekend and they are still in place.

Well so much for that.

Seems you and me are in the same boat. Please keep us posted on your progress and what you find. I will do the same.

The sensor magnets need to be checked as well. The CDI chart will help with the alignment.

Thanks ezeke, I just checked the positioning of the sensor magnet. The markings on the sleeve look to be in the right spot, but the magnet itself looks to be cracked !!!

Now what ?

Can this magnet be purchased, or even replaced without trashing the flywheel ??

OK now I'm lost.
There is a sensor magnet on the flywheel?
All of my magnets look exactly the same.
Also I'm pretty sure I don't understand the pic
What is the inner circle with the square bump?
What is the outer circle and the two sets of lines?
Did I mention I'm now lost????????

btw
Islander- Loser buys beer?
sounds good to me.

Okay there Edge...the markings on the sensor magnet are perpendicular to the magnet itself. If you turn the flywheel upside down, and look at where the keyway mates with the crankshaft, you are also looking at the sensor magnet. The markings are VERTICAL on the sleeve that holds the magnet in place. The schematic that was provided shows where the markings should be in relation to the crankshaft keyway.

The only way you can check it is with the flywheel off the engine.

As for the beer, I don't mind losing, butcha gotta show up here on the ICW...maybe do some fishing and tell some stories...

We had Mahi-Mahi for dinner tonight, but it was not caught by me...talk about an oxymoron !!!

OK, I think I got it. I will have to check tommorrow.
Work got in the way tonight.

Never had Mahi.
The last striper that was brought to my house for dinner wasn't caught by me.
The girlfriend caught it.
I'll ever hear the end of that one.

Ok my sensor magnet is in the right spot.
Much easier to understand when the flywheel is in front of you.
I took a couple of pics of the stator and timer base.
Anybody see anything that looks like it could be causing the no spark problem.

I got it running today....I think it was the magnets and re-gluing them in place. From your pictures, all looks pretty much in place, but the stator looks alot more rustier than the one I replaced, but that did not solve the problem.

Can you show a pic of the flywheel upside down ?

It's ALIVE !!

Islander, congrats on getting it running.
Hopefully I'll get mine going soon. Today I'm going to replace the battery cables and give it a try.

Here's the pic of the flywheel

Re: 86 Johnson 225 No Spark

Finally got it running.
Turns out it was bad battery cables. Replaced them all and installed a new add a battery switch and relay.
Runs and sounds great.

Thanks guys.
