Hey all,
Im looking to remove the control valve on my 86 Johnson 200 because it is leaking. I know i can remove it and replace with thermostats from a newer 200 (93 or later i think) which ive heard is better than having a control valve. Im just wondering exactly what parts i need to do this or do they make a kit to do this?
Thanks for the help!

I don't know of any kit for this, but you could go to shop.evinrude.com and compare part #'s between the yrs. I've heard of this being done before and it works.

If you go to my motor rebuild thread. I list how to do it, what part numbers you need, and what you need to modify to get the t-stats to open at the proper temps/rpm ranges. It is listed in my signature. It is somewhere in there.

I'm sorry I just finished looking for the numbers, but could not find them in that thread. So I will list what you need and where you can get it.

If you go to Evinrude.com and go to their parts page. Look up late 80's 70hp outboard. The covers and t-stats and spring will work. I think I used 1987.

Also you need to trim/compress the spring down from 2.0" in length at free length to 1.75" in uncompressed length. This will allow the t-stats to unseat at around 1700-2000 rpm. It should idle at 165-175'F and when running above 2000rpm's it whould be at 120-130'F

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. Is that all I would need is just the covers, thermostats, and springs or would I also need the gaskets and other parts in the diagram at evinrude.com? I was looking at the 87 70hp btw.

You do need the gaskets, The rubber seat that is pressed into the head is the same. But you could replace it if you want. I did. Other than that it is the same.
