'86 Evinrude 25 hp idling problem

The carburetor has been cleaned out thoroughly along with a new Sierra overhaul kit installation, but
will not idle right. The Sierra instruction sheet shows a needle valve bearing and a caution that "it may
not come out when needle valve is removed. Carburetor can be cleaned without removing bearing."
I managed to remove the slow-speed needle valve along with the needle valve retainer, but no bearing
was evident.
My Seloc manual identifies the carburetor as type II single barrel, front draft, with adjustable low-speed
needle valve with special packing. High-speed is fixed orifice in the float bowl. There's an exploded view
that shows packing and a packing nut, but no mention of a bearing??? Am I missing something?
I am pretty much convinced that the idle problem has to do with this area of the carburetor, but am not
100% sure of what all exactly should or shouldn't be in this particular idle circuit. The OMC part # for my carb is:
0396855. I saw a part listing for Evinrude Needle Packing part #18-7106-9 that replaces OEM part#
OMC 307583. Is this used on mine? Any help is most appreciated! Happy July 4th!

Ditch the Seloc manual and get an OEM workshop manual for your engine and year.

Thanks for your reply jasper60103- I guess that my carb doesn't contain either a seat bearing or packing/ packing nut, but the idle
problem remains unresolved, and a search for a replacement carb is next to impossible. I've tried using Seafoam in an attempt to
remove carbon build-up, but would like to hear reviews on other products like Yamaha Ring free, Mercury Quickleen or others that
would help smooth out the idle. Anyone?

Thanks for your reply Haffiman- Yes, I now realize that the Seloc manual leaves very much to be desired!
But, it was reasonably priced (just right for us folks on a rather tight budget).

Re: '86 Evinrude 25 hp idling problem

Here's an update on my carburetor idling problem- it's now solved! I removed the slow speed needle and retainer, looked closely with
a bright flashlight and noticed "something" was in there. I bent a tiny hook on a stiff piece of wire and managed to fish it out.
The "something" was in fact a needle valve bearing in a somewhat gimped-up condition. I knew that the part was not on the parts list
for my particular carburetor, nor was it included with the Sierra overhaul kit I had used. I found that the needle valve bearing (Part #
0314166) is used on 311 engine models from 1969 through 1978. I bought the part along with a new flush attachment and some
Johnson / Evinrude Carbon Guard.
After replacing with the new needle valve bearing by inserting the small end first using the slow speed needle to seat it, I started
the outboard and adjusted for the best idle. Wow, what a difference it made. I just launched my boat today for a trial run and it
ran great and idled smoothly the entire time! I think I'll take it out again tomorrow! :D
