Hi, I have read several posts on this subject, but still do not fully understand. My warning horn comes on (constant sound) as soon as I turn the key on and the motor will not go above 2000 rpm (approx). At first this problem was intermitten, the motor may run at 2000 rpm for a short period and then start running at full speed. The last couple of outings it has been constant. The last time the horn did not go off but the rpms were still limited. I have read in other posts that the 86 year did not have S.L.O.W., is this so? That sure seems to be what is going on. I do not think the heat sensors are bad, once when the horn was not going off I took the heat sensors out and ground the wire to the block and the horn would come on. I tried to find the blocking diode, but was unable to identify it. I admit I am not a very good mechanic. If I disconnect the main red harness and the horn does not come on, does this tell me anything? The vro is still connected. Could this be a possible cause. I was under the impression that the horn would make more of a beeping sound if the vro was faulting. Is ther any way to permanently disconnect the S.L.O.W. function? Any advice or suggestions will be a help.

Jerry,I don't believe that a 1986 model was equipped with S.L.O.W. The constant tone is initiated by one of two things.Overtemp or no oil sensor in the VRO pump.Trace the wires from the VRO pump to the electrical connector(amphenol plug)and disconnect it.Now try turning on the key and see if the alarm no longer sounds.

Hey Jerry,
Welcome to iboats.
You're right, your engine doesn't have S.L.O.W.
Looking at the wiring diagram, it looks like the hi-temp and VRO are connected to the same horn and make the same steady sound.
I think you've got two problems. One is the horn and the other is the engine isn't running on all cylinders all the time.
I'd fix the warning horn first. If the engine's not hot, check the low oil switch

Thanks for the info. I sure thought the S.L.O.W. was the explination. Just to make sure this is an 86, the model # is E120TLCD. If the horn is bad is it the horn itself or the key switch? If I am not getting fire to all cylinders is it the power pack, coils, or even a possible combination of both? Thanks again.

10-4 It's a 1986. I'm with Hooty.I think the constant alarm when key is turned on and the 2000 RPM intermittent situation are unrelated.Unless of course the VRO pump is failing.

Yikes, ob.

Jerry,
Like I said, I'd check that switch in the oil tank and see if it's hung up on something first.
After you get the warning horn worked out and have the boat in the water and it won't turn up more then 2000 rpm, give the choke (primer) switch a good bump, until the engine picks up and runs or tries to flood out. If it picks up rpm, you've got a fuel problem. If it floods out, good chance it's something in the ignition.

c/6

Hooty
