I am trying to determine if operator error (mine) caused this or bad gas etc...

I started my port engine one morning this weekend and let it run for appx 20 min to charge batteries. I then shut it off and it dieseled about 4 chugs.

I didn't think anything of it until I attempted to start the motor about 2 hours later it would not turn over. I immediately thought of the chugging and assumed it had hydrolocked. I pulled the plugs and turned the motor over a few times. The plugs were wet but no appreciable water came out of the cylinders that I could see. I cleaned the plugs and reinstalled, engine would not start. Put in new plugs and finally got engine started. Engine ran fine the rest of the trip.

1. Did the dieseling of the engine suck water in exhaust (my assumption)?

2. Did the way I ran the engine contribute to this? (someone suggested that if I ran engine at medium idle for a long period to momentarily bring the engine to a medium rpm before shutting it down)....

3. What other factors could cause an engine to diesel?

thanks

excessive carbon build-up inside the combustion chambers, timing adjustment, bad gas (octane) could be a bunch of factors. good luck

Ayuh,....

I do it whenever I'm going to tear down a motor,... It saves Awhole Lot of scraping later....
It'll also sometimes help with a Run-On issue....

Fire up the motor,+ run it til Up to normal Temp,....
With the motor running about 1500rpms,...
Slowly pour a 16oz. bottle of water directly down the carb's throat,... Pour it fast enough to cause the motor to Labor, but Not Stall....

It'll Steam Clean all of the combustion chamber, piston top, valves, etc....
Sparkplugs included.......
