I bought This Broken Bass boat - it's a 1986 Winner. The serial # plate is gone, and I have no idea on how to find it. Does anyone know if there is any identifying marks/parts I should look for to have an idea of the exact serial #? The reason I need to know is that I think the stator is bad (resistor testing showed about half what the manual said) but I need to find out the serial # to confirm resitor settings in manual, and to make sure the proper stator is on the motor (I don't want to replace the wrong stator with the wrong stator).

also, I found a small solid state electric box, about 2"X3"X3/4" on the top of the engine, mounted near the back on the port side with 2 screws , and it has 3 wires - black, white w/black stripe, and a red wire. the black wire is grounded to the motor, and the white w/blackstripe and the red are twisted together and taped with electrical tape (does not look like factory specs) Anyone know what the box is?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The box you speak of is the idle stabiliser--it advances timing to maintain idle speed. I'm told the motor will run without it and that seems to be the case.
Sorry I can't help with the stator question; I'm trying to figure out my own stator issues as well. What are your symptoms?

There should be a serial no. stamped on the top of one of the heads. Cant exactly remember which one, the left i thing but its easy to find. Just take the cowel off and its stamped on a flat circular (bout an inch in diameter)part of the head.
