I have an 86 VIP Deckliner that my father in law gave me awhile back. Well I've done a few things to it and couldn't ever get it started. Well today I decided to check the compression in the cylinders. Bad news it needs rebuilt. A couple of cylinders are either low compression or none at all. I have been thinking it needed rebuilt but this just confirmed it. So I will start the tear down on my next day off. I'm hoping it doesn't need a bunch of machine work and maybe just a rering, but knowing my luck it won't happen.

Ayuh,.... I'd sooner think a rebuild long block will be cheaper in the long run....

Pull the drive, then the motor,... it's easier to work on in the garage on a stand...

For kicks, if you have not done so, take the valve covers off and crank the engine to see if you have some valve sticking, etc.

When I pulled the spark plugs it looked like they had rust powder on them. Also when spinning the motor over with no spark plaugs in it the motor seems to drag and I just bought a new battery, battery cables and had the starter rebuilt. I'm just gonna pull it out and rebuild it or get a short block for it and just have the heads reworked. I'm gonna price everything out before I decide what to do. I'm hoping it is just a rehone and rering job and its running, but I doubt it.

Alpha One and it does have oil in it. The Mercury tech at work said it could be the drive causing the drag too. I plan on pulling the outdrive on my next day off, just didn't feel like doing it today.

Just called the machine shop to get prices. By the time I order an overhaul kit and get all the machine work done, I would have roughly $1000 in it. Then I would have the headache of building the engine with no warranty. I told my wife to start saving for the long block. I still plan on rebuilding the one that's in the boat but it would be a project to do a little at a time. I still need to check the outdrive out and make sure its fine.

I had to stay home today with my sick kid, so I desideratum to pull the out drive. Motor still turns over slow and the out drive seems to be in good shape. I'm hoping we can get the money together to get a new motor by this summer.

Re: 86 5.7 260hp mercruiser

I want to put an aluminum intake manifold on the motor when I get the new motor in. Would this one be a good choice or would y'all suggest something else?
JEGS Performance Products 513001 JEGS Champion Series 331 Performance Dual Plane Aluminum Intake Manifolds
I plan on using the Quadrajet that's on the motor, I just rebuilt it this past fall so that's why i'm thinking about getting this intake. That and to shave a little weight.

Ayuh,.... The weight savin's will be un-noticeable, 'n aluminum rots quicker,...

You'd be as far ahead just reusin' the iron manifold, which is 'bout the same as the aluminum 1, 'n put that money into the fuel tank as gas...
