86 275 Volvo shims uper trans

Last fall i removed uper trans case to
replace ujoints. Not a hard job.

Hears the qustion?

The shims are in bad shap. Can i just take them in
and mach them up, at the boat shop. have them size them up
and give me new ones

I have labeled the shims Hear is some Pic
4 shims on the inside of the baring box and
2 on the outside of the box some are of dif sizes see pic

Im planing on new shims mark the gear and put it together
take it apart and look at the inside gear to see if it mesh right

Do you have an OEM service manual?
You can't just LOOK at the gears to check the mesh.

I have the manual What the name of the stuff you

put on the gear to mark them.

Those shims are not all the same thicknesses. They come in .002, .004, .008 and .014 sizes. Unless you get them in the proper order you will have gear failure very quickly.
You also have to have pressure on the upper and lower gears to check the backlash on the upper and lower gears with everything bolted together to see if you have the proper shimming.

its called lead paste, prussian blue will work and in a pinch mix chalk line chalk with motor oil to make a thick paste.
but like DonS says there is more to it than that.
but yes you can simply measure the old shim thickness and order new ones just be sure the shim packs go back in the correct spots.
