I recently went to change my gear lube and the drain plug wouldnt come all the way out so assuming it is bent and stuck.un the shift lever arm I dissassembled the entire lower unit (after breaking the head off the drain plug screw )to get to the back of the tube to get after the shift lever arm and remove the rest of the drain plug screw and pin .in so doing I began to lose patience and attempted to drill out the remainder of the pin and in so doing I flubbed ip the threaded hole where the drain plug screw goes .I was going to fix this by installing a new plug screw and completely filking in the hole w a mixture of jb marine weld and two part epoxy understanding that in so doing I will have to remove the lower unit to drsin the gear lube frim now on into the future .does anyone have any reasons why they think this, will not work .????????

Are you mistaking the shift yoke retaining screw for the drain plug? The shift arm yoke screw is in the side of the bullet and should never be removed. The drain plug will be in two places: On the bottom of the bullet in front of the skeg. It can have three different screws. 1. A large flat head 3/8 screw. 2. A stainless slotted 1/8 NPT pipe plug. 3. A 5/16 Allen head set screw. The other location for the drain plug is at an angle between the bullet and skeg midway along the length of the skeg.
Next time you go to drain the oil, if you can not find or remove the drain screw, remove the anode. Then remove the two bottom bolts holding the bearing carrier (spool) the oil will drain quite nicely out of the holes but you may need to tilt the engine in a bit to get all of it out.

No Title

The 86 came with an allen slot in the screw.
If you don't want to remove the drive every time you change oil.
Just unscrew the fill/vent screws and fill from there.
Push out the old until fresh oil comes out the other.
But that won't be necessary cause you know where the drain is now!
