85hp lower unit water tube seal

Last fall picked up a 1988 85hp force in good condition. It appeared that the prior owner replaced the lower unit with an older Chrysler (white).

When I started it this weekend it ran hot. Dropped the lower unit. Impellar looks like new.
My question I did notice that the water pump assembly connects to the brass water tube without any type of rubber gasket. Cannot tell from the waterpump thread if a gasket rubber sleeve is supposed to be there. If I need one where do I get it.

If the water tube is a friction fit what else could cause the motor to run hot. Motor sat for probably seven years before I got it. Could it be theromastat. Ran hose through system does not appear to have any blockage.

Thanks Tom

How do you know it ran hot? Did the overtemp alarm go off? If so, pull the thermostat and try it?

John,
lower unit off. need to know if prior owner left off gasket/seal at water pump housing--or do the motors lack a seal there??

The little square box with the drive shaft going through it is what I assume we are taking about. That is the water pump body. There are only two seals connected to it. 1. the Garlock seal that the drive shaft goes through. This should be inspected for damage to the part of the seal that rides on the shaft. Any damage here and the pump will pass water out of it.

2. the water pump seal that goes under the stainless steel backing plate. If this seal is left off, you will not get enough water for cooling at high rpm.

There is also a plastic tube which connects to the water tube. Sometimes this is referred to as the water tube seal.

John--between the plastic tube on the water pump housing and the water tube that goes up to the block is there ant type of gasket/seal or does the coopper tupe just press into the water pump housing??

On the early modles, the water tube pushes into the white plastic fitting on top of the pump. There is no gasket on the outside or inside of the plastic fitting. On the newer pumps, they have a black rubber seal on the pump housing.

The black rubber seal is a bellows and a crankshaft seal. The "washer" fits over the top of the drive shaft and sits on a very small land. It is installed with the groove UP. The rubber bellows is installed with the beveled edge UP and the plain edge inserted into the groove. The whole assembly plugs into the crankshaft and hopefully seals out water. It almost always falls off when you remove the lower unit.

If your lower unit is white it is "older"-- between 1879 and 1985. (I think). I think Force changed colors in 1986.

Define "Hot" That is subjective. water at 135 degrees will scald skin. Touching the block or head should be quite uncomfortable but you should not jump away from the heat. As mentioned above: Did the overheat alarm sound?
