WHAT A GREAT PLACE! I HAVE FOUND AN 85 HP JOHNSON V-4, WHITE, MODEL# 85TL79R, SER#
J5135499. IT IS CURRENTLY ON A 1972 PIPESTONE MARINER BOAT, A CLASSIC ORANGE AND WHITE TRIHULL. MY QUESTIONS ARE: 1. WHAT YEAR IS THE MOTOR, A 1979 PERHAPS DUE TO THE 79 IN THE MODEL#? 2. THE BACK TOP CORNER AND HANDLE ON THE BACK OF THE COVER ARE BROKEN REQUIRING FIBER GLASS REPAIR, AND/OR A NEW COVER. CAN I GET A NEW COVER AND/OR CAN I GET NEW JOHNSON V-4 STICKERS IF I REPAIR IT? 3. THE MOTOR HAS BEEN SITTING OUTDOOR IN DENVERS DRY CLIMATE, MOTOR HAS NOT BEEN RUN SINCE 1992 WHEN OWNER SAID IT RAN STRONG. WHAT MAY I BE UP AGAINST TO GET IT RUNNING AGAIN, AND WHAT PROBLEMS SHOULD I LOOK FOR? I WOULD EXPECT TO DO COMPLETE TUNE,CHANGE HOSES, COMPRESSION CHECK==IF NOT SEIZED UP. OWNER SAID HE DID FOG IT WHEN HE PUT IT UP FOR WINTER IN '92. MY ASSUMPTION IS THAT MOST PARTS WOULD STILL BE READILY AVAILABLE. IT ALSO HAS A HYDRAULIC TRIM WITH TWO CYLINDERS ON THE MOTOR MOUNT. WHAT MIGHT BE INVOLVED IN DOING A REBUILD OF THE HYDRAULIC PUMP? ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE EXTREMELY HELPFUL.

Yes its a 1979 model with a 20" shaft. Expect to put kits in the carbs..check the lower unit for water and change the lube. Replace the waterpump impeller with the full kit including the housing.

The style cover you have was produced on engines up to 1998. You could probably find a good used one almost anywhere. I would suggest you contact Gary at Gary's Marine (www.garysmarine.com) - he carries a large stock of good used OMC parts. As far as maintenence and repairs are concerned the Ken Cook Company (www.kencook.com) can supply you with a reproduction of the factory service manual (or a parts catalog or owners manual). Decals are going to be difficult - Originals are available only back to 1990 (or so). If you want "newer" ones it'll be no problem. If you want originals a local decal or graphics shop might be your best bet - many can reproduce what you have on the existing cover. If your trim unit is a Prestolite unit, they went out of business a while back and parts are scarce for those units.

-John
