85hp Force .. to rebuild, or to replace .. that is the question!

Well, I have a post over in the project section, about a free cc that I got with an 85hp Force motor on it. I received the boat from my father-in-law. My wife remembers going out on it when she was a kid, so the boat has a history, and was a great boat at one point. The boat sat for several years because of an issue with the carburetor, and a floor repair that needed to be done. I was unaware until the other day, that the carbs were pulled and worked on by a family member, who even though he is a vehicle mechanic, screwed them beyond repair, and they are long gone. So, my dilemma is this .. I don't know if the motor is repairable/rebuildable until I get carbs and do a tune up to it and am able to try it out. But, I don't want to spend a fortune on a set of carbs if the motor is screwed in some other way, and has to be replaced anyway. So, any suggestions? Anyone have older carbs that could be rebuilt that they are willing to part with, or know where I can find some? Thanks for the help.

Well, before it can be determined if this is worth it or not you have to find out if the engine is hooped or still sound. First, I would start by getting a manual...very good investment and little money. Next I would do a compression test and see what you find (look for 100psi + all holes and within 10% of one another). To do a compression test you don't need the motor to run, just crank. Next I would drain the lower unit and see what comes out....hopefully no water. Research some of the previous threads on all these topics to get some useful tips and to avoid mistakes.
Then, to replace the carbs...go to ebay. There are Force parts on there, including carb sets, all the time and they usually go for a comparitive song.;)
My two bits, and good luck....might end up being a great motor for you.
BP;)

Thanks a ton. I'm so glad I found this forum. Talk about one of those things that just seems to be coming together. This entire project has kinda been like that, with things working out as I go along. Love this forum!

I'll give it a shot as soon as I can get the boat moved and see what I find. I had planned on picking up a couple of manuals including the Clymer shop manual when I get my next paycheck. I love manuals, have a ton of them on different things at my shop, never hurts to have reference materials, that's for sure. Thanks again for the info.

by "cc" i assume you mean cuddy cabin. I have a '84, 16' cuddy w/ the 85 on it. it has been a fantastic running set up, very plaesed & easy to maintain. hopefully in another month or so to pul it out & get ready for this season.

I second everything prarie said & if it's just a carb issue, you could end up w/ a very good running motor. ck w/ "Frank A" on the forum..last i read he has many carb packages for that motor. what year is your rig? just curious..

No, sorry .. center console. And I'm not totally sure. I'm still waiting to get the paperwork from my father-in-law regarding the boat. He couldn't remember the boat/motor years, it had been so long since he had messed with it. Is there a way to find the year of the motor, on the motor somewhere? I looked, but haven't dug into it too far to see if I can find any identification plates or numbers. And yeah, according to my FIL, he said it was the carbs that messed up, family member took them to rebuild them, screwed them up, and they vanished. After that, the boat just sat for a long time. The bad part was the cover had been left off for a long time, so I'm hoping that didn't have adverse effects on anything. I'm also trying to figure out if the motor has tilt/trim. I have to get some time to dig into the boat and motor a little deeper, and take more/post more pics of it all. I've seen Frank around answering posts. If he doesn't catch this one, I'll have to get with him I guess.

Around the motor there should be a plate with the model number of engine. Thru that model number I, as well as someone else can look up year.
