I have an 85 hp force motor with T&T. I am looking to part it out because i am unsure what wrong with it. My mechanic pulled the head and could not find any issues. however he did not look at the reeds. the headgasket needs replaced before we can do a leakdown test. I know the lower unit is in working order and the majority of the other parts have been replaced. fuel lines, carbs etc... How much can I ask for the lower unit assuming it is in working order? and assuming that 95% of the motor is functioning? how much could I ask to see the motor as is if most is functioning?

Well saying it is a proving it is are two animals. I know most people especially with the help of this forum will probably stay away from a motor that they can not test or check out themselves. If it is disassembled, more than likely you probably would only be offered a core value.

Part it out if you want, I made over $1600 parting both of mine out in 2 weeks. I got 450 for a lower unit in good working order, but had damaged skeg, I sold the other for 350 and it needed the bellows piece. I got 350 for the PTT, 75 each for the starters, 75 each for the triggers, 40 each for the CDIs, 10 each for the coils. and sold a bunch of other misc. parts as well. Both of my outboards had bad powerheads(one sucked a screw through it, and the other, the mechanic forgot to turn the water on to the earmuffs and destroyed the cylinder walls and pistons). I was actually quite surprised how fast this stuff sold, and personally wouldn't wouldn't hesitate buying another one just to part it out, and am going to look at a 125hp tomorrow.

Re: 85hp force outboard

Parts will always bring more than the sum of the parts. "They" say that an avg. $15,000 car has about $40,000 worth of parts in it. I guess it's why people don't just "build their own" for the most part. To find a parts value, search ebay for "closed auctions" for a like item. Best place to sell most of the parts, imho. Heavier stuff, maybe not.

boatisbroke got premium $$ from his stuff.
Depending on the time of year and how bad someone wants it.
I bought a 88/125 $200 and promply sold most of the pieces.
Keeping the so called good T/T(found out it was bad anyway)
