Re: 85hp evinrude HELP PLEASE

Is it in neutral? Is the fuse blown? It probably is near the solenoid. Are the battery terminals shiny clean and tight?

Beyond that, you have three choices.
1. Take it somewhere and have it fixed.
2. Start throwing parts at it till you luck out.
3. Buy yourself a multimeter and learn how to use it. Then use it to troubleshoot the starting circuit. A wiring diagram will help, but there again you have to understand how it works.

It is NOT the power pack, so don't throw one of those at it.

Re: 85hp evinrude HELP PLEASE

Go to the engine FAQs, Mrc. Do the starter circuit troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start".

My guess is corrosion in one of the connections of battery cables to the engine, most likely where the battery ground cable bolts to the engine block.

Let us know what you find.

FR is a retired experienced evinrude dude thats why. based upon what you have described your problem is way before the power pack.

Re: 85hp evinrude HELP PLEASE

Hints: The starter and its circuit are independent of the ignition.

Once the engine starts, it can run independently of the battery, starter and the ignition switch. In fact, you can start the motor with a rope, sans battery, starter and ignition switch.

Re: 85hp evinrude HELP PLEASE

If you can start it with a rope, you can choke it or disconnect the fuel line to stop it.

If you want to try it, disconnect the big red plug at the engine first; that will eliminate wiring problems at the ignition switch, ground and kill wire in the harness. (You could jump the starter the same way, its a tad easier :))

Re: 85hp evinrude HELP PLEASE

The solenoid's large posts are connected to the starter on one side and the battery on the other.

The small posts are connected to ground on the engine and the 'S' post on the ignition switch.

When the ignition is turned to start, the positive voltage reaches the solenoid to activate it. This allows the battery voltage on the large post to pass through the solenoid to the starter.

The diagram should be accurate for most 1977 wiring except for the 'C' post on the ignition switch which is a separate choke toggle on many 1977 remote controls.

Check the wiring inside the large red plug for corrosion. Also check all of the ground connections at the engine.

Re: 85hp evinrude HELP PLEASE

Check your battery cables or by pass them with jumper cables. I have had new looking cables that were so corroded inside that they would not spin the motor over.

Re: 85hp evinrude HELP PLEASE

Take some jumper cables and connect one end of the cables to a good, charged battery(make sure it is connected properly and the other end isn't together when you connect to the battery). Now take the remaining end and connect the black/negative/- cable to a ground on the motor(not a painted surface). With the remaining red/positive/+ end, press it against the connection on the side of the starter. If the starter engages, you have a bad connection somewhere between the starter andbattery. if not. maybe a bad starter.

Re: 85hp evinrude HELP PLEASE

Take a small jumper wire and connect point 3 and point 6. The solenoid should work, allowing the starter to turn.

Be careful with battery jumper wires, if you connect the wrong places you can seriously damage your rectifier and ignition.

Re: 85hp evinrude HELP PLEASE

Sometimes I wonder why I wrote "Outboard won't start". Then I wonder why people won't read it and go buy parts that aren't broke instead. Finally, I wonder why people ignore my advice to read it.

The only way to know that a connection is good is to measure it with a voltmeter when under load. It does not appear that you have done that.

A ground connection that looks clean is your worst enemy. Take it off and clean it. It only takes a few thousandths of an ohm of resistance in that connection to produce your symptoms and it costs you nothing to clean it.
