Can anyone fill me in on known weaknesses on the 85HP model C85TLRR 2-strokes? It's a 1993 model year. My teenage son is looking at a used boat with one of these, it's a fresh water motor that looks clean for the age, but I'm interested to know if these have any known issues that I should look for.

Only known weakness on these tried and tested, superb things…would be a previous owner. They can stand some serious abuse though, these things. About the best of them really.

No probs. As always, compression check is vital with determining the health of an old 2 stroke
Yes, this is part of the challenge. The trim relay is bad (only trims one direction) and it's on a flats boat with a poling platform, and the platform prevents us removing the hood on the motor without fighting with the trim. The owner is an elderly woman who cannot physically get to the boat so we talked to family members, and I was debating how full-contact I wanted to get with it (read: try to break the trim release screw free) before we had more of an idea how serious we were about buying it. There's always some risk wrenching on someone else's motor and I really don't want to take any chances in this situation in case we don't buy it. It's an as-is sale, definite project boat, just trying to get some idea whether it will be reasonably reliable on the other side should we choose to jump in. ;) Super nice people anyway.

if you cannot test what you need to make sure the motor is good, then the as is price should reflect that
