1969 Max. The last two numbers in the model tell you.

EDIT: Hit the darn wrong button again.... :D Starting in 69' and ending in 79', the Johnson model numbers were like this....the year in the model number.

What do the letters at the end of the Model # mean?

I have an 85ESL69S.

the S refers to the model number run. Just when it was manufactured in 1969

Thanks. I want to get a factory service manual and wanted to be sure that S wouldn't make a difference in getting the correct one.

That year still had the hydro-electric shift (up through 1972). Good luck with it, it can be pesky.

P.S. Make sure you use the Premium Blend or Type C gear lube, made specifically for electric shift gearcases.
