Aol has kiced me offline 3 times and lost my message. I'm trying to write fast- please excuse me. See my post nothing to do with boats turning the page. (1) The starter shows strong continuity between hot terminal and case. Man at starter shop says it has too much torque yo be defective I know starter has good brushes & bushings. Is he right? (2) Solenoid shows continuity between the 2 small terminals. Is this normal? (3) There is a bolt in the center of the crankcase- looks like the plug in the oilpan of acar. It had 2 threads screwed in just about fell off in my hand. What isit? How bad is that for my motor. Thankyou Gotta get this posted before aol......

Ahoy, Griz. Get pretty PO'ed at aol myself lately. Makes you wonder what you are paying for, doesn't it?

What is your problem? Sounds like the measurements you have taken are about right. There are others that count, too.

Give us some details.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

gizzly...starter should test like a dead short., is ok in that respect...#2 is yes...#3..if I am thinkin of the same bolt you are, [9/16" head, funky tab washer underneath it] it is the main bearing retainer screw, and it needs to be put back in....it holds the main bearing block inside the crankcase cover, screw it back in and tighten gently, no more than 2 fingers on the wrench, you dont want to strip it..factory torque {i think} was 150 in/lbs

Re: 850 Mercury

Thanks guys, I feel better about it now. I didn't want to put it back together, thinking all the while I'm going to have to do it over. That kinda takes the fun out of it. I've been going through the forums on engines and motors. I'm back to late October now and you've helped me more than you know. It's interesting to see so many Mercurys with similar problems. Coffee's gone, confidence is renewed, I'll keep you posted. Have a great day.-G.

Re: 850 Mercury

About ready to crank. Got another question. I took the flywheel apart to remove the stator because I didn't have a puller. I got a puller later so I could change the timing belt. I didn't let either shaft move when I replaced the belt. I marked all the pieces to the flywheel and put them back right. But I didn't see the timing marks. now I find they do not match up as described in the Clymer manual. The 3 dots matched to the pulley arrow.-Not The circular bolt pattern and the spacing of the magnets seems the same no matter how you bolt the flywheel back. It should crank if the crank shaft and the distributor shaft are still the same.-Right? Then I'll just undo the hub bolts and realign the timing marks for future reference. Sounds good anyway. I sure do want to hear it run. I appreciate the help. -G.

I am posting this in installments because my AOL is still acting up. I couldn't post at all last night. Sorry Rex, mine is not the bad lower unit. Seems like I read about it and if I recall it I'll post you here.-G.
SEE REPLY ABOVE FOR MY QUESTION.

Re: 850 Mercury

I'm adding three posts (PLEASE READ THE LAST TWO ABOVE) trying to get as much posted as I can before AOL says GOODBYE. I originally posted in the wrong place and I will bactrack to bring it up to date. The 850 is 73-75 that has a history of being hard to start cold then started well the rest of the day. Toward the end of last summer it didn't want to crank anytime. It still ran good. So far, with your help, we've:
 •
Cleaned or replaced all elect. connections.
Replaced rectifier, put new leads from stator.
Rplaced fuel lines inside cowl, new primer bulb.
Put kit in fuel pump,Cleaned carb filters.
Cleaned starter,had it checked.
Replaced timing belt, cleaned magnets on flyw.
New spark plugs.
This evening I get to hear it run.
If you go back 2 posts, I have a question about the timing. Have a great day. -G.

Re: 850 Mercury

It's ALIVE! Sounds like music. Still hard to crank cold but big progress. Started good after sitting an hour. Fired right up on 2nd, 3rd & 4th tries. Might have been sluggish from not being run since August. Put fresh fuel in tank last night. Will try again this morning. Left motor tilted up, cold night-good cold start test. Noticed that it will run on full choke. Suspect it's pulling air somewhere in the fuel route. Will check that along with battery and kill switch. Got to change flywheel to realign timing marks. Plugs have never been run but I kept them in an open tupperware bowl for about five years in my basement shop. Wonder if I should invest in new ones? I backed the idle screws out to 1 3/4 turns as read in these pages. They had been set on about 1 1/8. Seemed a little smokey? Still ran pretty good though. Seems to have an irregular skip. Possibly a plug misfiring? I reinstalled my AOL 7.0 and it is working good now. Boat is running, it's going to be a sunny 60 degrees, I detect an early spring, life is good! Have a great day.-G

Re: 850 Mercury

Wasn't able to work on the Mercury 'til late today. I had pumped the bulb after putting fresh fuel in last night. The bulb was still hard,a good thing methinks. I mashed the choke button, spun the motor about 10 seconds and it roared to life! I shut it off, covered it up, and cleaned my tools. That's all 'til after Christmas. Sincerely hope you all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS> -G. :D
