The iboats forum moderators are excited to announce that at this time it appears the iboats forums posting pictures function is working once again. Though we cannot promise for how long, we're hoping for indefinitely.
Yes, the lower cowling is trapped by the midsection to powerhead joint. They must be seperated to remove the lower cowl. The lowest piece of cowling, the "U" shaped part that says 850, is held on to the lower cowling with 4 self tapping screws.
Ok, powerhead is off. My plan is to rebuild the carbs, fuel pump, replace upper and lower seals and any thing else that I see that needs it. According to the parts diagram, this thing doesn't have a thermostat or poppet.
Should I go ahead and remove the exhaust cover and baffle and replace all the gaskets or just leave them be? What would you do?
Ok. Ya, been there done that. I rebuilt a 75 650 last year and broke off three bolts in that one. I managed to get it fixed and served me very well this past year. Since then I have somewhat perfected a technique to get those things off. Just didn't know is there was value in messing with it since there is not stat in there.
As long as the motor is run in fresh water, the water jacket covers and gaskets last a long time. Salt water will eventually rot out the baffle plate and inner water jacket cover. Removing those will break bolts (and your heart and will to live).
I haven't really seen any evidence of it having been used in salt water. My 650 showed signs of it but this one not so much.
I noticed at the bottom of the water jacket that there are a couple of holes with caps threaded into them. Are these used to allow drainage from that part of the motor?
