I have the merc 75 hp on my 17.5 deep v aluminum f/s boat now. Tops out about 31-32 with me and my 2 kids 16/14 yr olds. Overall happy with the motor. Just picked a '85 Yamaha 115, I don't know much about theses v-4's. Not sure I'm going to swap a proven motor to me to an unproven one. Anyone have an insight on these two motors in terms of performance/ reliability/ fuel usage difference on my boat? I haven't had a chance to run the Yamaha yet, compression is 117-119 on all 4. This is just a thought as of right now not sure if I want to mess with the current set up. I plan on taking some bigger water trips with it this yr and with 3 adults/gear I thought that the bigger motor might be a better option. Boat is rated for 120hp.

You should have a min of 85 hp on the boat for any kind of performance but the decision is yours.
