The trim just stopped working while we were out boating last week. Our friend bled the fluid out of the hydrolic line and took the motor apart. He found that the brushes were shot. We have been calling around to replace the brushes, O rings and seals - parts would have to be ordered and would take a week or so. We need to use the boat this weekend and are looking for a solution until we can fix the trim properly. Is it possible to replace the fluid (how do you do that?) and use the boat by manually lifting and lowering the engine?

Re: '85 Suzuki 140 Trim problem

This is from my manual that covers your hp engine as well:

The pump is equipped with a manual release valve. Opening this valve by turning its hex head up to 2 full turns counterclockwise permits manual raising and lowering of the outboard if the electrical system fails
Caution: The manual release valve is not equipped with a stopper. If the valve is rotated more than 2 full turns counterclockwise, it is possible that the valve will work loose from the valve body.
In saying that I would be very careful
that when this valve is in an open state that you do not suck water into the hydraulic system.

Huntington Beach - spent a few days a couple of summers ago lying on the beach there - wish I was there now ! :)

Hope this helps
Mike
