85 rude can you run the motor with the charging leads disconected from the battery

Can you do this and cover the terminals and run the motor with out doing damage to the charging circuit? I am needing my battery to run the trolling motor and the instructions in the trolling motor say not to have the trolling motor on the same battery that the engine is on. They say the starting will send a spike to the trolling motor and kill the circuit inside.

What "charging leads" are you proposing disconnecting? If you mean the battery cables, no, never disconnect the battery with the motor running. If you mean the yellow wires on the rectifier, yes.

However, from the sound of the troller's instructions, they are not talking about the charging but the starting of the big motor. (???).

Sounds like a crummy trolling motor to me. If there is such a danger, why didn't they build in some stray voltage protection?

Bottom line: You are supposed to have a second (deep cycle) battery for the trolling motor so you don't discharge the starting battery and find yourself hitching a tow back home.

My problem is there is not enough room in my small boat for my big battery, my 6 gallon tank and another battery. I have a new 55 lb Terrova Minnn Kota. Not a crummy motor and I take offense at you getting on here and talking like that. This place is a place for help not shyt comments like that.

You should have a second battery, I have a starting battery and then another to run the boat itself, lights ,troller ect. and as he stated you stand a very good chance of stranding yourself using the starting battery to troll with.

How big is your boat that you need a 55lb troller but don't have room for another battery??

Really your only option is to disconnect the starting battery and use it to troll then hook it back up and hope you have enough juice to stert your motor.

And as stated, never run your motor with the battery disconnected, it blows out the rectifier and they are $65+.

Well My motor is a 15 hp evinrude and it has a pull start and I was wondering if you could just take the leads from the motor to the battery off and just shrinktube them but I guess not as it might burn the rectifier up and don't want to do that. This is why I put the question on the forum in the first place thank you.

First, I apologize for the "crummy" word. It was uncalled for. I only meant to question why they didn't build in protection, so easy and cheap to do.

However, as I said, you can disconnect the yellow leads from the rectifier and continue to use the electric start feature. IF it truly is a problem with the alternator damaging the trolling motor.

Re: 85 rude can you run the motor with the charging leads disconected from the batter

I have a deep cycle battery for the trolling motor, but the lowe boat that I have has those things filled with foam on each side in the back of the boat and there is not enough room for the fuel tank and two large batteries. No matter how I look at it there is not enough room in my boat for two batteries. I don't want the gas tank in the boat with me as there is not enough room in there now.

So you really need some way of isolating the trolling motor from the outboard starter voltage spike.

I'm thinking a 2 way battery switch which will direct current away from the troller when you run the outboard , you don't actually use the trolling motor when the outboard is running anyway.

Then if the trolling motor runs the battery too low just use the rope start.

If your trolling motor has spring loaded clips just disconnect them when you want to use the boat motor. If is has terminals that are secured with the wing nuts add a male and female trolling motor connector in line. Then you can just unplug the trolling motor when you want to use the boat motor.

Would you think I would be better off using a small motorcycle battery for the 15hp evinrude?

Re: 85 rude can you run the motor with the charging leads disconected from the batter

By all means check out what I am about to say with an expert, ( I am not an expert on this) but does your motor even have a charging system that would be damaged if you ran it with out the battery hooked up. At one time I had a 1966 20hp Johnson with electric start and a built in rope recoil starter. There were numerous times I would run the motor without a battery. This motor had a sliding insulator on the battery leads and I would just slip it over the terminal and roll the leads up and use the recoil starter. However I will say that to the best of my knowedge this motor had no type of charging system and it also had points as opposed to a breakerless system that you no doubt have. Check out your owners manual and do some research but you might find that you are OK without a battery. If though you do have a charging circuit you must never run the motor without a battery and preferably one with a good charge on it.
