I just purchased 16ft. Whaler with a 85 Johnson Javelin outboard.
The engine cover says "85 Javelin"
Runs fine and all but has nothing to tell me the engine water temp.
Is there a place to install a gauge or high temp warning on this engine?
Model # 85ETLR78C Ser# J4964175 What year is this engine?
I've been told these are solid, good outboards. Correct?
Thanks for any info.

Re: 85 Johnson Javelin

It is a 1978. It does have an overheat alarm. Ground them out and the horn should activate. The heat switches, installed in each cylinder head, are in series with a "HOT" warning horn in the remote control box. Should an irregularity develop in the cooling system and cause abnormal water jacket temperatures, the switches close the warning circuit. A switch may be checked by submerging it in hot oil. Using a test light to check the contacts and a thermometer to check oil temp., the contacts should close at a temp of 211 F + or - 6 and open at 175 deg F plus or minus 7.

To remove switches for testing, pull back insulating sleeves and open knife terminal connections. Remove cylinder head covers and switches. On installation, clean gasket surfaces thoroughly. Apply gasket sealing compound lightly to both gasket surfaces. Also apply the same sealing compound to top surface of heat switch grommet and again after cover has been installed. Install cylinder head cover using a new gasket. Reconnect heat switch leads and slide insulating sleeves over connections.

Re: 85 Johnson Javelin

High trim, beg to differ with you, this is from another site, but has been on iboats for years. it is a 1983.

Johnson and Evinrude Model year codes
Johnson outboards prior to 1969-1980. The year is in the Model number (not the serial number) Example: Johnson 1969 115hp = J115EL69S.
The number highlighted here in red is the year.

Evinrude outboards 1969-1980. The model year is in the Model number as the first digit after the horsepower. Example: Evinrude 1975 75hp=E75543B. In this instance the red “5” is the model year.

Johnson/Evinrude outboards from 1981 forward uses a two letter code derived from the word Introduces to establish the model year. See matrix below.
I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

Example: 1998 Evinrude 115 = E115TLECS the EC represents 98 or 1998.

Please note: BRP has committed to continue to provide owners with a method of determining the model year of all outboards produced under the Johnson or Evinrude brand names.

Re: 85 Johnson Javelin

I just got the year from the North Star Page, this is the link, is this not correct TD?

It is the 16th box down.

Here is another example that says it is a 78, using his model number of ETLR78C, on page 47 of 80. Im confused as to why it is an 83 TD?

Re: 85 Johnson Javelin

Hey, thank you allfor the info.
I did ground them out with no results. I think that maybe I should check the buzzer alarm before pulling the swithes. By "remote control box" I assume that you mean the shifting/start mechanism/throttle control, or is the alarm located elsewhere in the wiring scheme. As for the model year, I'm still confused.
Gotta stop now, have to watch the Red Sox womp on Cleveland again!

It is a 1978 as clearly stated by the 78 in the model number. Slide the insulators back, bareing the knife terminals and ground the terminals to the head, with the key turned on. The horn should blow. Removing the sensor switches just to test them is a total waste of time. So you find out that they work this time. What does that tell you about next time?

The best protection against overheating is to replace the water pump regularly. Once the hot alarm goes off, it's already overheated. The truth is that if the pump fails suddenly at high speed, it will cook the powerhead before the horn ever goes off. It happens that fast.
