I know this has almost been done to death in the past but please bear me out.
I have a Force 85hp, 1989, 856F9F.
I've only owned the bost for a few weeks but i know the previous owner and he never had a problem. (i think i believe him)
When starting (in the Med) it takes about 3 mins of turning over before it fires, and if switched off and restarted another 3 mins.
Was serviced 2 weeks ago (by non-merc etc) mechanic who put new plugs in etc. but won't have done much else.

I've read that a fuel pump rebuild will help (parts 23 & 24 right?) so this will happen once international postage is sorted out.

Plus, I intend a "seafoam" spray-through, although that isn't available out here - intend using a local carb cleaning aereosol, any recommendations of "big brand" equivalents?

finally, i noticed that engine seemed to run sweeter (sound and revs) just while it was running out of fuel (I have been told to disconnect fuel line and allow pipies to empty after the flush through)
- is this sweeter sounding engine indicative of something important - ie is it giving me a clue towards a clogged carb/compression issue?

thanks - only slightly worried
b.o.a.t - bring on another thousand!!!

Re: 85 hp starting

A couple of things. First make sure when throttle is in its lowest position the carb butterflies are closed. Also are you choking motor by pushing in the key? Sounds like motor is flooding. Once motor is warmed up you should not have to choke it anymore. Running gas out of the lines is dangerous in a two stroke unless you are using fogging oil while doing it. The racing or sweeter sound you are noticing is carbs running lean. If one carb empties before the other one you still have cylinders moving even though they are getting no gas or lubrication. Mercury sells a product called power tune that is similar to seafoam. However If you have to order parts international my guess is that this product is not availible to you either. Ask a car parts store if they have anything.

cheers for the reply. (the famous euro speaks)
I am pushing key in.
I also thought it could be too much fuel so will look at the choke butterflies.
We do have a mercury dealer in town so will look for this stuff.

btw
I noticed when i was in there they have for sale 2 brand new force engines - a 9hp and a larger one, pos 50 hp - no sticker.
didn't ask how much.
just how old are these motors?

thanks again

Force motors have been out of production since 1999.
ID tag on transom mounting bracket will indicate year.

If you cannot get Seafoam, get the Mercury PowerTune.
Ordinary carb cleaner does not have any oil in it to lubricate your engine.

I would be more concerned with the throttle butterflys. At low throttle they should be closed. If they are sligtly open this can cause a flooding condition.
