85 hp Force Tilt and Trim Question

I got out on the lake this morning and the motor would not lower. Tilt was just making a clicking sound when lowering. Interesting enough it would raise. Is there a tilt override where I can lower and raise the motor manually. I noticed a small screw that I could take out where the tilt fluid is kept, but this did not do anything. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: 85 hp Force Tilt and Trim Question

I'm a complete land lubber so take this for what it's worth. I've been researching tilt and trim issues and I've read that you may have two relays that control your tilt / trim: one for up and one for down. When you mention a "clicking" sound, that leads me to believe it is relay related. My older boat doesn't have such a thing (I don't think) so I can't really tell you where to find the relays. I've read that they may be inside the engine cover close to where the wiring goes into the engine cover. If you can locate the two relays, swap them and see if your tilt / trim issue reverses itself (goes down but not up). If so, then replace the bad relay. Or better yet, replace both relays and keep the "good" used relay as a spare.

Again, I'm a newbie / land lubber / rookie / JAFE / etc. so take what you can use and flush the rest.

Good luck!

I think it is the relays also. Just purchased three off of ebay for $8.00. I am hoping that is the solution.

Re: 48

relays are located under the cowl of the engine right near the starting selenoid... cant really miss them.. And if you can miss them just take the cowl off and click the button to operate the trim and youll here it click ... just locate it then ..

classic symptoms of a bad relay. if you swap relay and problem reverses direction then it is relay for sure.
