85 hp 850 mercury

just installed new wiring harness on my 77 model mercury 850 and have 1 red 18 awg wire left over. paper that came with harness says it goes to the positive side of rectifier and it may not be needed, but i dont know what the rectifier looks like so it would be greatly appreciated if someone out there would have a good picture to post or give me a good description of where it is on the motor.

Your rectifier is a black, square device, ( 1 inch by 1 inch or so) mounted on the front cowl support. It will have three threaded posts for connecting two yellow stator wires and a red battery charging wire.
