I have an 85 Force on a 16 Bayliner Capri, as do many others. Model # 856X3L. Recently, I have experienced a loss of power while going through the full throttle range. I experience a hesitation and a very slow pick of RPMs to eventual top speed which has deterioted from 37mph to 32mph. What would cause the hesitation and loss of power? I have replaced the fuel lines and fittings, used the WALMART 2 cycle oil, checked the carb floats, verified the butterflies. Is this typical of a CDM failure? How is the electrical system best checked at home?

Re: 85 Force

I would try to Decarbonize it first, before replacing electrical parts. But even before that, run a Compression check to find out what condition the Motor is in. Should be at least 100 PSI on all Cylinders(120-130 would be better) and within 10-15% of each other. Let us know!

Then find out if it is electrical or fuel. Look at the plugs for color. Get a $5 spark checker and ear muffs and chack the spark. Should jump 1/2" easy. If plugs are funny, one dry others not, or one light others dark, look there-clean carbs. I got one too, just put a transom in it. Was not bad. Motor runs good and speedo says 40 with SS prop of unknown size. I want to put a pad on it now.
