85 Force Outboard Motor "locked-up"

I have a 1985 Bayliner with a 85 HP Outboard Motor. It has run well for over 3 years. All three cyl seem to have alway had good compression. Recently, the motor has locked up. The starter would not turn the flywheel. I took all three spark plugs out and rotated the flywheel by hand, then I turned the engine over. The starter engaged and turned the flywheel. I put the plugs in and got the motor running (Briefly--it was shaking and makeing clunking noises) then it quickly stopped. Now I can not turn the flywheel at all even by hand. I cannot rotate in either direction, not even the slightest. The engine is locked up. The day before the engine had stalled in the channel as the prop had bottomed out, but linkage wise the lower unit seem to be in neutral as the prop spins freely.
What am I looking at here and how much to repair $$$. This boat only cost me $1,800 and I can not justify have the entire engine redone.

Or is there any used outboard motors 85 hp to 90HP out there that I could purchase for around 400 to $500?

WOW WOW WOW
CHILL!!!! your motor has siezed up! just poor some penitrating oil into each scylander and let it sit for a day, when you get back the next day try moving the fly wheel, if it moves and if it does not move poor some more penitrating oil in the cylanders and let it sit for another day! next day see if it moves it shouldmove freely :) fill it up with gas and run it with double the oil mixture run her at full throttle for an hour cruising along
that should help :)

Do you mean the lower unit was in neutral when you hit bottom? Or you mean afterwards the prop spins freely when you have it in neutral. I guess it could be a possibility that the driveshaft has seized. I'm not sure though someone else may be able to comment on this but i dont know about it being coincidence that you bottomed out the day before and now the motor has froze.

No the day before I had the problem, as I was pulling into dock in a shallow channel. The prop hit ground (Sand) and stalled the engine. I started it back up and it kicked up some mud and I got the boat docked.

The next day about 10 minutes into a cruise, I experience the problem as outlined in my orig post. And yes I did have water coming out the exhaust port so it was not plugged up.

What I mean is I believe the problem is not in the lower unit as I can spin the properler in neutral, so that should not be effecting my locked up engine----?? right?

CraigO - I have the same boat/motor. Sorry - can't help with your problem, but have a couple of questions for you...

1. How is your interior? Ever replaced any of it? If so, I have a couple of questions for you.

2. Where do you live? I have a nephew who goes by the name of CraigO.

3. Can you look at your motor and tell me something? Pull off the engine cowling. Behind the bottom carb, there are 2 lines coming out of the bottom of the manifold. One of them goes back up to the top of manifold. Where does the other one go? It is about 6 inches long. Mine is just lying there with a plug in it...

Good luck with your problem - Sloppy's idea sounds like it should work...

Don't believe the penetrating oil will help you on this one Craigo. You prob. hung a broken ring after a cease. To be sure , pull the cylinder head and inspect the cylinders. If they are all scored up, be assured you've ceased the piston. I imagine you have a Force outboard and the cost of a rebuild would be more than the worth of a 17 yearold outboard. My best suggestion is to part out what you have via ebay or the such.
You won't find many outboards in the price range listed...

I would pull the lower unit first to make sure that is not the source of your noise and lockup.

Re: 85 Force Outboard Motor "locked-up"

Based on everybodys reponses it does not look good. Either a Power Head rebuild --over $1500 or lower unit rebuild--also over $1500.

Anybody got a used Force 85HP outboard or perhaps 90HP. Maybe my transom could even handle a 115HP

Perhaps if some has a motor with all the remote controls, it does not even have to be a Force outboard.

Anybody have one for sale that runs?? and less than $1000?? Less than $600??

Anybody no what a 16' 1985 Bayliner Cuddy Cabin (fairly clean) is worth with a locked up motor in the Great Lakes area (Lake Erie)??

Thanks

i saw a boat around here for sale with the exact same setup as you do, $3900, but it runs...

I will give you a couple hundred for that motor, maybe it will help you absorb the cost of a new one

todd@williamsen.net

Horndog,
Will you pay $400 for this motor?
It is the top cyclinder (of the 3 cyl) that is fried. Lower unit and all other components are good.
Also are you interested in buying the whole boat?
It is a 1985 16' Bayliner with Cuddy Cabin in good condition.
