I have an 85 evinrude 3 cyl 60 hp engine ,just purchased ,was a rebuilt power head but has given me some headaches ,after break in ,double oil method.now I am on new fuel. I had hard time idling ,idle was racing up and down ,missfires etc ,found 2 bad wires and 1 bad coil,OH all the carbs ,were very clean. did link and sync and had it idling good on muffs in a barrelabout 2 ft deep.took on lake, started awesome, idled awesome ,warmed up,went into gear started to accel then it bogged down and fouled the plugs. only was able to get to run when I cranked the timing advance lever to 28 degrees, spec is 19,did this to get back to dock ,took it very easy ,checked cylinders and pistons with boroscope when I got home and they are ok,I had never checked WOT to see if the butterflys were opening fully(silly me ) so last night I moved the max throttle screw almost 4 turns to get the butterflys to open fully, and redid link and sync. my question before I take another regretfull lake trip is am I missing something ,my thought is without being able to have WOT ,on accel I fouled the plugs a few times and then it started running like crap. I had another post "evinrude timing question" but over 100 views and no replies, can anyone give me some insight. the only other visual thing I see is the top carb spits a little fuel out of the idle holes in top of carb body ,can feel it slightly spitting on your hand where as the others are fine,I checked the reeds and they are good,no damage and sealing ,look new.when I got home #1 cyl was only one that had dry plug, was very minor oil fouling on other 2 but I had stalled it ,gave up and electric trolled back to dock.I am leaving for vacation friday and I am stressed.
B.O.A.T stands for Bring Out Another Thousand. which I dont have.and I may not have a wife if I spend anymore on it. 1 more thing I noticed ,when reving it up with carbs only ,not advancing ,the timing does advance about 10 degrees. Is this normal? I thought these only had mechanical advance .thanks in advance ,no intended pun.
