i just replaced the impeller again on my drive, for the life of me, i cannot figure out why the unit stops 1/2" from mating with the upper unit.... im thinking its the plastic water tube since it fits loosely in the housing

when installing the drive, should i have the controls in forward gear or just the lower unit? or both?

lets say that question gets answered, when i have the boat in neutral, should i hear a light/slight clunk coming from the drive like the shafts are almost mating ? i can assume common sense says this is missed aligned but not sure if its up on the engine or down in the lower unit (shift shaft)

any insight to clear this up is greatly appreciated.

May be that the splines on the driveshaft are not aligned, try turning the prop a little bit counterclockwise. The control should be in forward, and the prop locked counterclockwise.

sounds like you need to get a manual 6 for the drive and do some reading up before you break something.http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf
lower unit splined shaft fully clockwise,, prop locking CCW. control box in fwd. raise unit making sure upper shift shaft shoe locates correctly on the lower splined shaft.,turning prop CCW helps align the driveshaft splines.
When assembling it, put a slight coating of grease on the rubber bushing in the top of the water pump cover.it helps the copper tube slide in.
Also make sure the upper shoe is in a straight line when mated

I posted two replies to this thread this morning. I refreshed the page and saw them there. Now they are not. Did they get deleted or is it just a site problem and they never got posted correctly?
