'85 75HP Outboard - Excess Fuel in Exhaust?

I own a 1985 75HP 4 cyl Merc outboard that starts great. It has excellent power and runs smooth at high rpm, but it doesn't like to idle and/or run at low rpm's so much. I have noticed that the exhaust spits alot of fuel into the water if I run it in neutral next to the dock for awhile. Also, it seems that one of the carbs spits excess fuel while running. I am presuming that the excess fuel exiting the carb and the exhaust ports is related to the low rpm/idle issue. Any thoughts? TIA ... Fred.

i'd say yu have a carb problem, slow idle too rich, or float stuck, and not closing all the way. running fast it will burn the fuel, but slow or idle it is flooding out.

Thanks. I did have a problem once where the float stuck closed and it wouldn't start. I had to tap the side of the carb with a screwdriver to unstick the float so it would start. Sounds like the float is the first thing I should try. Thanks ...
