The engine does not like to start when cold! I've tried primeing the bulb allot or not at all same with choking. The carb was just rebuilt and it did not help! when it finaly does get started (after about 50 puls) it runs great! warm starts are allso no problem (about 1/2 a pull) the screen neer the fuel pump has allso been cleaned. It just wont start when cold!

Is the choke plate in the carb closing when you pull the choke on?

That engine should start within 3 pulls. I agree with above, is the choke actually closing?

Plus: Where is throttle setting when you are trying to start?

probably in the "start" position which is completely useless i just turn the throttle wide open and back it off when it starts

the choke plate is closing and I have tried the throtle between start and wide open and everyware in between! could it be something with the fuel pump? the fuel hose is allso new and the gas is fresh. fuel lines in motor aprear to be in good condition, the one from pump to carb is newand clear so i can see if it is geting gas!

Re: '85 15 hp Johnson starting trouble

alright lets start simple then .... what plugs are you running in it ? are they new? if not change em the proper plug is L77JC4 CHAMPIONS ONLY for this and all omc engines - the rest run like crap and i dont know why but they just do ....

check your spark make sure it will jump a 7/16" gap with a hot blue spark

if the pumps new and the carb is clean it has to be something ignition related

Squirt some fuel/oil mixture into the carb, pull the choke and see if it fires up. If so there is a fuel problem. Would tell you if it is a fuel problem or something else.

Re: '85 15 hp Johnson starting trouble

just thought of something when your trying to start it how do you go about it?
on a cold start youre sposed to pull the choke out and pull it until it lights off and sputters push the choke in and give it another pull and it SHOULD run adjust the throttle down after about a minute and youre good to go

so i guess my question is when your trying to start it what does it do? does it sputter a bit ? or is it like youre just pulling the cord with the safety switch off?

How many times are you having to squeeze the primer bulb? After pumping it a few times it should get hard enough that you cant squeeze it anymore. If its not getting hard, it may not be pumping fuel to the carb, which would explain why it takes 50 pulls to get it started but then it runs fine afterward.

It has new plugs and they are the right ones! as far as the priming goes i've tried not priming it and priming it many times and every ware in between. the bulb seems like it dosent get that hard. when trying to start it dosent even begin to fire until you pull it many times like it isent getting gas

If your bulb isn't getting hard it may be flooding. Try a normal start procedure except don't pump the bulb, use a spray bottle of mixed gas as suggested above. I would also do a compression check so you know the numbers. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: '85 15 hp Johnson starting trouble

I think I found the trouble! it was the fuel pump. I took the pump compleatly apart and it appeared the diaphram was streched out, I fliped the diaphram over cleaned every thing and put it all back together. It started on the second pull when it was cold, I will try it again in the AM if it starts good again I'll know for sure I found the problem. I have ordered a new pump as i dont think this one will last long with an iffy diaphram, I'll keep the old one as a spare just in case. Thank you all for your advice.

Re: '85 15 hp Johnson starting trouble

thats not too bad on the price ...

this ones got the small square pump right? i did mine in about an hour and half - i kept hearing it was a royal PITA to do these little guys so when i was done i looked in the bag to make sure i didnt miss anything, and blow tested it twice just to make sure, the dirrections help ALOT and BRP is the only one that includes em in the kit .... but i AM the type of person that LIVES for the tedious things in life so?.... but it keeps me sharp:D
