85 115hp Charging Question

I have reviewed my SELOC manual and I cannot find the particulars on what the motor should be putting out as far as voltage goes. I have a fishfinder that shows the current volts, and with my 50hp 1985 model when running at normal cruising speed she would kick up to about 14 volts. Well this one never kicks over 12.6 volts. I have a brand new marine starting battery (biggest marine one at wallyworld) How do I verify the true charge coming off the motor? I want to ensure that I dont need to carry a back up all the time as space is very limited in my boat, and I dont want to have any problems. I havent run her dead yet or even down low enough to need to require a recharge from an outside charger, but then again only taken her out on the lake 2x now.

The easiest way I know or the way I do it is put a volt meter across the battery and when the engine is running probably 1500rpm's or better the voltage reading should be 14 volts or so.It should read more than just the battery voltage with the motor not running. My 85 was reading 12 volts all the time, replaced stator(For other problems)and the rectifier which was bad but haven't checked it with a meter since then but it should be good.

Re: 85 115hp Charging Question

My 1985 - 115hp puts out about 14 volts at low RPM and goes as high as 17 volts at WOT (as reported by the fishfinder). I'm a bit concerned about the voltage being too high but so far no problems. Like you I have not been able to find what the nominal voltage should be.

By the way the engine is easy to start with a rope should the need come up. I've tried it a few times on the trailer and I still have the original emergency starting rope in the plastic pouch in the cowl.
